From 5th June to 12th June, 1915, and again from 22nd June to 25th June, the  2nd Royal West Surrey (Queens) battalion of 22 Brigade, 7th Division, were in the front line at Givenchy, just to the west of La Bassée in France. Here they had to contend with the usual conditions and dangers of trench warfare, which included shell fire, snipers and patrol work and some casualties were sustained by the battalion. In between these spells in the front line they were either in support or reserve where they provided work parties for various tasks which could also be dangerous work.  Francis Greeves died from wounds on 22nd June but as yet, there is no information, as to when and where he was wounded.
